How To Pack Fragile Items Like A Pro

Woman packing moving box at home

There’s a particular kind of dread that comes with wrapping up your grandmother’s china or that wine glass set you’ve somehow kept intact for years. One wrong move, a bit of rough handling, and it’s gone. But packing fragile things doesn’t have to be a gamble. Movers do it every single day, and the secret isn’t luck. It’s method, the right materials, and a little patience.

Here’s how to pack your delicate bits and pieces so they travel safely and arrive exactly as they left.

Get Your Kit Together First

Trying to pack fragile items with the wrong supplies is a false economy. You’ll use more, it’ll take longer, and things are far more likely to break. Before you wrap a single thing, gather the basics:

  • Sturdy double-walled boxes in a few sizes
  • Plenty of bubble wrap and packing paper
  • Strong parcel tape
  • A marker pen for labelling
  • Old towels or blankets for larger pieces

If you’d rather not hunt around for it all, we stock everything you need. Our packing supplies include proper moving boxes, tape and wrap, so you’re not left improvising with newspaper the night before.

Line The Box Before Anything Goes In

A bare box gives your items nowhere to land softly. Scrunch up a few sheets of packing paper and create a cushioned base at the bottom. Do the same at the top once the box is full. Think of it as a soft landing at both ends, so nothing knocks against the hard cardboard during the journey.

Wrapping Glasses & Stemware

Glasses are among the most nerve-wracking things to pack, but they’re actually straightforward once you know the trick. Wrap each one on its own, never together. Start at a corner of the packing paper, roll the glass across, and tuck the ends in as you go. For anything with a delicate stem, add an extra layer around that weak point.

Stand glasses upright in the box rather than laying them flat, and fill any gaps with more scrunched paper. The aim is simple: nothing should be able to shift or clink against its neighbour.

Plates Travel Best On Their Side

It feels natural to stack plates flat, but that’s how they crack. Wrap each plate on its own, then pack them standing on their edges, like records in a crate. On their side, plates are far tougher and can take the bumps of a move much better than when they’re piled up. Slot a little padding between each one for good measure.

Mirrors, Pictures & Anything Framed

Flat, framed items need their own approach. Tape a large cross of masking tape across the glass first. It won’t stop a break, but it holds the glass together if the worst happens, which keeps the mess and the risk down. Then wrap the whole thing in bubble wrap and stand it upright in the van, never flat, where it could take weight on top.

Label Everything Clearly

This one’s easy to skip and easy to regret. Mark every fragile box on more than one side, and add an arrow showing which way is up. It tells everyone handling it to take extra care, and it means the delicate boxes get loaded sensibly rather than crushed under something heavy.

A Handy Fragile Packing Checklist
